Baby, you can drive my car..!

The City of Melbourne funded the genuinely impressive Linda Catalano’s QuietRIOT to create an immersive theatrical event to celebrate the amazing legacy of iconic Aussie company, Holden. Linda and I have revelled in the chance to co-direct the marvellous BABY, YOU CAN DRIVE MY CAR, Linda’s crazy cardboard dream-child. Staged at Shed 21 in Fisherman’s Bend in the Docklands, in and around Holden’s original stomping ground, a winding grand prix race course, a drive-in, a car wash, an electric charging station and a miniature second-hand car yard all popped up overnight for the youngsters attending the Celebrating Holden event. In collaboration with the dynamic Dan McCusker of Casey Tech(nology) School, we recreated five quintessential Holdens from across history… in miniature… and… in cardboard! Much to the delight of the hardcore aficionados as much as the intended audience of under 12s, our tight team of performers and facilitators worked alongside a flurry of eager artists to decorate and construct their dream cars, and then immerse themselves in the our playful automobile- oriented wonderland. Watch this space; it appears that BABY, YOU CAN DRIVE MY CAR might be back faster than a custom GTR XU-1 Torana..!
