Developing the suite of digital resources for Victorian Opera’s world premier of Jonathan Mills’ brand new Australian opera, ‘Eucalyptus’ gave me insight into the reworking of a classic premise; from ‘girl-meets-boy, dad gets in the way’, to ‘who really holds the power in arranged marriages?’ Collaborating with the inimitable Lisa Grigg and Tim Ryan on a series of digital workshops pitched at upper secondary students gave us a chance to explore the ‘F’ which so often goes unquestioned in ‘fairy tales’, scrutinising old tropes through a contemporary lens.
