The Crucible

2020. The year that was. As Producer of this school production of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’, I learned a lot. A hell of a lot. Once the children had been cast in their roles, Victoria’s lockdowns were announced in response to the growing list of fatalities resulting from the global pandemic. Staying physically safe was the first item on the international agenda; staying connected came a close second. I am very proud to say that due to the tenacity and resourcefulness of all involved, ours was the only school production in Victoria, perhaps Australia, to proceed in any form in 2020. Our cast pivoted from onstage to on air roles, as I frantically negotiated with international rights holders about the legalities and logistics of broadcasting a prerecorded radio play version of this classic stage play. I was humbled and grateful for the grace shown by MTI, both here and in The States; thanks to their generosity, the kids remained connected through online rehearsals and socially distanced recording sessions with the divine Steve Cooke from LSS Productions, during some of the world’s most protracted and stringent lockdowns on record. And their families were able to share the fruits of their labours over two nights of digitally streamed access. What a time in history… may we all retain the humility, grace and kindness we drew upon then. And Miffy F, I would walk with you through the bowels of hell again any day; you are an incredible Production Manager.
