Arts Education
Through my company, Between the Lines, I offer consultancy within Arts Education, and an array of other relevant services. Writing education resources about live performance, interviewing creatives about process, participating in and facilitating panel discussions around curriculum, VCE text and playlist submissions on behalf of theatre companies, authors and publishers to VCAA; I love being the conduit between the Arts and kids of all ages.
Here are some lovely people saying kind things which are relevant to my work in Arts Education:
‘Claire occupies that middle space between the education and arts sectors, and works to bridge the gap between the two in a way that is creative, inclusive, playful, and also practical. If you want an advisor, a specialist, a coach, a grant-writer, an edu-pack, or a creative solution to a problem you can't even articulate, Claire is a popular choice for a reason.’- Lorin Clarke, Writer.
‘Arts Centre Melbourne engaged Claire to work with us on developing a strong Drama and Theatre studies Playlist application for our 2023 program – their deep knowledge and ‘big picture’ thinking was key to creating a thorough and compelling application that clearly spoke to outcomes, and addressed where we could support potential knowledge gaps for students.’ - Zoe Rinkel Senior Producer, Creative Learning | Arts Centre Melbourne
‘Claire is an education consultant for Outer Urban Projects (OUP) working with our producing team to place our performing arts works and texts within the Victorian and national secondary curriculums. Claire is an exciting addition to OUP as we widen our young audience reach and introduce students to our talented artists and artistic works developed in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs and is assisting us to make a significant cultural and social impact on a new generation of students and future artists and art consumers. Claire is a warm, no jargon communicator willing to go the distance to offer us new and exciting market placement opportunities.’ - Kate Gillick, Executive Producer & Co-CEO | Outer Urban Projects
Having taught classroom Theatre Studies, Drama, English, EAL and Literature since 2007, I am now delighting in the privilege of working with students of all ability levels who feel they need extra support in these subject areas. I am particularly fascinated by the Monologue and Solo creation process, and by the opportunity to analyse life performance and texts from the VCAA lists. Please email directly with any enquiries for the upcoming academic year. This link will take you to an interview with one of my fabulous Theatre Studies students, Mad Li, who was invited to present her Monologue as part of Top Class, and who was offered a place studying Acting at NIDA straight after our work together in Year 12. I am very proud to say that the two legends I tutored in Theatre Studies in 2022 have both been invited to audition for Top Acts on the basis of their exemplary monologues. Well done, Alex and Emiley! And congratulations to Alex for being accepted into NIDA straight out of school- I am so proud of you!
Here are some of the kind things some legends I’ve worked with over the years have said about our times together:
“I don’t think I’d be even half the person I am today if I didn’t meet her and work with her.” - Lizzy Mathers (Former Student/Actor)
“She taught me to be fearless and that with hard work I could achieve things I didn’t know were possible.” - Lily Walker (Former Student/Actor)
“The genuine respect and support that she has always demonstrated towards us made theatre studies much more than a school subject, and gave us a special place in which we were able to feel empowered and comfortable.” - Maddy Li (Former Student/Actor)
“Mx Wearne taught me to be myself, and to be myself unapologetically.” - George Conheady (Former Student/ Paramedic/ Stunt Person)
“They taught me to accept weirdness, in its various forms” - Izzy Peltekis (Former Student/Makeup artist)
“Mx Wearne taught me that in order to gain respect, you don’t need to be or act superior or better than other people.” - Becky Britton (Former Student/Academic)
“Claire is a bloody legend and the influence they have had on so many students will continue to guide and inspire for eons. They remain one the most incredible, motivating, terrifying and brilliant artists I’ve had the privilege to learn from.” - Connor Johnston (Actor)
‘Claire Wearne is an expert in her field of Drama and Theatre Studies. In my time working with her, she demonstrated a thirst for excellence while showing a true consideration of the individual.’ - Susanna Rummel, Head of Performing Arts | Mentone Girls’ Grammar
‘Claire is honestly one of the most impressive drama educators in the country. Their commitment to enabling the best theatrical experience for their students is awe-inspiring. Whether it’s mentoring them in professional practice, eliciting their best ever performance or guiding them through world class productions. Claire doesn’t stop until the best result for everyone has been achieved! If I could choose anyone to teach my child Drama, Claire would be it!’- Melanie McLean, Artistic Director | SSoCA

Tutoring
I have taught a combination of English, Literature and EAL at a range of year levels for 16 years. I am particularly fond of text analysis and am looking forward to the implementation of the new study design; some great changes are afoot! Please contact me via email if you are interested in tutoring for the upcoming year; very limited spaces available.
Here’s a nice thing my most recent English boss wrote about me:
‘Claire Wearne is an extraordinary educator and a brilliant writer. When Claire joined the English department at my school, they brought boundless energy, passion and deep knowledge of an array of diverse and contemporary literary voices and texts. Working with Claire was a joyfully energising adventure.’- Sonia Murr, Learning Area Leader, English | Woodleigh School
